Excellent BookFive stars

C, RG Johnson(Wales, UK)

I needed to learn Excel 2007 in a rush for a new job; I bought Learn Excel 2007 Essential Skills and just skipped though it, it was so easy and straightforward. I was so impressed with the book (and myself I have to say!) that I had a go at 'Expert Skills'. I did not regret it, once again it was easy to follow and I got through it with ease and..........thanks Mike Smart, I got the job despite my advanced years.

With these two books on your shelves you will never be stuck for an answer to an Excel problem, and you will feel confident to tackle all those tricky tasks involving Excel 2007.

Perfect Continuation of the Excel 2007 Essential Skills BookFive stars

N, Barber (San Antonio, TX, USA)

The Expert Skills book picks up where the Essential Skills book left off and is the perfect follow-up book in this series. If you've used the Essential Skills book to learn how to do day-to-day stuff in Excel 2007 like a professional, the feel of the Expert book will be very familiar to you. Everything I liked about the first book has been carried into this book: from the intuitive layout of the lessons to the well thought-out sample problem files. Of course the content is different, and this book does a great job of walking readers through the maze of advanced features found in Excel. In fact, the book taught me some formulas and methods that are difficult to find any other places (I looked).

However, this book is not an encyclopaedia of each and every feature in Excel, but I wouldn't really want to pay for a book like that anyway ... that's what Excel Help (F1) is for, which is free! This book is much more useful than that. Rather this book is a collection of tutorials and sample spreadsheets that build upon each other so that when you got to the end, you know how to do everything because you've done it yourself in Excel.

I should also mention here that I'm an Excel instructor, and though I knew how to do much of the stuff in here before I started, I still love this book. What's more, my students have purchased this book and they they really like it too. To me, that's the best sign of a great tutorial book: one that both instructors and students choose to use and re-use and re-use again. And the increase in my excel efficiencies has given me a very high return on my investment in this book.

Invaluable guide to using ExcelFive stars

M. Casey (London, UK)

I enjoyed learning to use Excel through the "Essential Skills" book by Mike Smart, as it provides an excellent guide to the more commonly used Excel tools. It is presented in a very clear and lucid style, with exercises at the end of each session to ensure that the new skills have been fully understood.

The "Expert Skills" book follows this format, allowing the reader to learn many more advanced and very useful Excel skills with relative ease. It provides an invaluable guide for those who use Excel in the workplace as there are lots of tips and shortcuts to make life easier.

This book is perfect for those who are proficient in Excel, but want to expand their skills to become more efficient and utilize Excel's advanced features.

My skills are now in such demand that I'm able to have a sense of job security even in a struggling job market.

I strongly recommend this book for anyone in an office position.

I have studied Microsoft Excel 2007 in the past, but iy was difficult and confusing. Then I studied Excel 2007 with The Smart Method, the first volume on the essential skill, and the second volume on the expert skills .

What a terrific and rewarding experience! The method is easy, complete and enjoyable. The explanations, the projects and the exercises are a teaching work of art. There are anecdocts and pieces of computing history that sound refreshing and informative. As bonus, there are suggestions how to navigate better and faster in the workbooks.

Moreover, I have found out that the author accepts questions and gives prompt answers.

I strongly recommend "Learn Excel 2007, Essential Skills and Expert Skills, with The Smart Method". If you want to learn Excel 2007, it is money well spent.

Excel lessons based on real excel applicationsFive stars

Smart creates Excel lessons based what he discovered working with actual excel users. As I have gone through this book, I have said "I know this, I know this," and then, "Holy Cow, I didn't know it could do that." It will greatly improve your efficiency in the use of Excel.

I have used Spreedsheets for 20 odd years starting with Ability - Qtro - Lotus and ultimately Excel.

Thought after all these years I was fairly conversant with Excel but purchased both 2007 Basic and Expert Skills by Mike Smart and discovered how much I didnt know.

Excellent teaching style and presentation I congratulate Mike for an excellent offering.

A great way to improve your skillsFive stars

M. Harding (Somerset, UK)

I have got plenty of benefit from this book. I had already completed the Essential Skills book in the same series about 6 months ago, but am a novice to more advanced Excel 2007 functions.

I so like the way the learning is divided up into bite sized portions. Each learning point fits onto 2 facing A4 pages, so there is never too much to take in. All the learning is done using examples, so you learn by doing, rather than reading which works really well for me.

The book is then divided up into 8 major topics. At the end of every major topic there is a short self test so you can check your progress and make sure you have learnt all the key points from that section. I used these too as a way to re-enforce my learning, so as I completed each section, I not only did that test but went back and did the previous one to make sure I was holding onto what I had learnt.

Overall there are lots of hints and tips in the book. Clearly it's a `technical' book, but the style is very friendly and approachable (this is not a book just for geeks). There are plenty of `ahhhhh' moments, when you discover a quick way to do something that has taken you ages to complete in the past, or suddenly have your eyes opened to something Excel is capable of that you never knew before.

There is no way I think I will retain all the learning in the book. But it has opened my eyes to what's possible and I will keep it close at hand as its bite sized learning format will make it very easy in the future to go back to, if I need to be reminded how to carry out a particular task.

Overall I think this is well worth buying if you are new to more advanced Excel 2007 functions or want a refresher. I would be very surprised if anyone works through this book and doesn't find at least one thing they can use to make them more efficient or effective in the future that more than justifies the cost.
